Modeling genetic and environmental influences in the etiology of conduct disorder: a study of 2,682 adult twin pairs.

چکیده
The etiology of conduct disorder (CD) was examined retrospectively in a sample of 2,682 male, female, and unlike-sex adult twin pairs from the community-based Australian Twin Register. Model-fitting analyses indicated a substantial genetic influence on risk for CD, accounting for 71% of the variance (95% confidence interval [CI] = 32-79%). There was not a statistically significant effect of the shared environment in the best-fitting model of CD, but a modest effect of the shared environment on the risk for CD could not be rejected (95% CI = 0-32%). The magnitude of genetic and environmental influences for CD liability did not vary significantly for boys and girls, and the specific genetic and environmental mechanisms important for the development of CD appeared to be largely the same for both sexes. The fit of a multiple-threshold model raises the possibility that CD may not necessarily be a discrete entity but rather an extreme of the normal variation in conduct-disordered behavior found in the general population.

Common genetic risk factors for conduct disorder and alcohol dependence.
The association between retrospectively reported childhood conduct disorder (CD) and a history of alcohol dependence (AD) was examined in a sample of 2,682 male, female, and unlike-sex adult twin pairs. There was a strong association between CD and AD in both men (tetrachoric r = .34, odds ratio = 2.8) and women (tetrachoric r = .53, odds ratio = 9.9). Genetic factors accounted for most of the ...
متن کاملTHE EFFECT OF GENETIC AL AND ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS ON LIPIDS: A TWIN STUDY
To assess the relative contribution of genetic and environmental factors (particularly androgens) on circulating levels of lipid fractions, serum androgen and lipid fractions were measured in 34 pairs of female-female twins aged from 15- 45 years, some of whom were discordant for polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) diagnosed by ultrasound. Nineteen pairs were monozygotic twins (MZ) and 15 pai...
متن کاملDSM-IV defined conduct disorder and oppositional defiant disorder: an investigation of shared liability in female twins.
BACKGROUND DSM-IV specifies a hierarchal diagnostic structure such that an oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) diagnosis is applied only if criteria are not met for conduct disorder (CD). Genetic studies of ODD and CD support a combination of shared genetic and environmental influences but largely ignore the imposed diagnostic structure. METHOD We examined whether ODD and CD share an underlyi...
متن کاملParent–Child Relations, Conduct Problems and Cigarette Use in Adolescence: Examining the Role of Genetic and Environmental Factors on Patterns of Behavior
This study investigated genetic and environmental influences on the associations between mother–child relationship quality (warmth and hostility) and adolescent conduct problems and cigarette use. Participants included 601 mothers and adolescent twin pairs (aged 12–17 years). Mothers and adolescents provided separate reports of mother-to-child warmth and hostility. A combined measure of mother ...
متن کاملCommon genetic risk of major depression and nicotine dependence: the contribution of antisocial traits in a United States veteran male twin cohort.
Many studies that found associations between depression and nicotine dependence have ignored possible shared genetic influences associated with antisocial traits. The present study examined the contribution of genetic and environmental effects associated with conduct disorder (CD) and antisocial personality disorder (ASPD) to the comorbidity of major depression (MD) and nicotine dependence (ND)...
